With remote working becoming a much more permanent fixture in our lives post-lockdown, contractors really do need to think about home offices. Prior to lockdown, many contractors may not have bothered with a dedicated home office, opting instead to work on-site with clients, while doing the odd bit of admin work in a shared space at home. But the chances are now that you may feel safer working from home, or your clients may not be working from their offices anymore. Either way, you need a proper workstation.

This might mean an all-singing-all-dancing shed or summer house in your garden, it might mean transforming the spare room, or even simply dedicating a corner of the dining room to work. Whichever space you go for, they all have one thing they need: a good desk. As you know, desks come in all shapes and sizes, from the purely functional to the super stylish. The Kingsbridge team have done a bit of online window shopping and put together a list of our 10 favourites.

1. BRUSALI Desk, IKEA

IKEA is something of an old faithful when it comes to home office furniture, and the BRUSALI desk is a prime example. At just 90cm in width and 52cm in depth, it’s compact enough to tuck away discreetly, while still being big enough for everything you need for work. The shelves are an ideal size for storage baskets so that smaller items aren’t cluttering the desk and, according to IKEA, the shelves can be removed entirely, leaving enough space for a PC tower if you have one. All this, and it’s a bargain at just £45.

2. Liberty Electric Workbench, Ergo Desks

At the other end of the budget scale, the Liberty Electric Workbench is ideal for anyone wanting the option to both sit and stand (great when you want to squeeze in some extra exercise and/or be kind to your back). The desk’s height adjusts at the touch of a button and can range from 715mm to 1,190mm. Ergo Desks allows you to customise your desk to suit your space and needs as well, giving you a choice of top sizes, finishes and frame colours, as well as add-ons such as cable trays, footrests, monitor arms and drawers.

3. Zeke Desk, MADE.com

MADE.com is renowned for sharp, stylish furniture so you won’t be surprised to see the walnut veneer finish and mid-century modern vibes of the Zeke Desk. If you need your desk to do a lot in a little space, and be on display for all to see, this could be just the desk for you. Designed by Simon Pengelly – a British furniture designer for 25 years – the desk features a hidden three-compartment draw ideal for storing important documents, and a flip-up piano style lid that allows you to create shelving to fit your home office materials. Beauty and function in one.

4. Sadie Desk, Wayfair

If simple and streamlined is your thing, then you really need look no further than the Sadie Desk by Wayfair. Oozing Scandi style, the combination of white metal frame and natural wood colour finish is relaxed and contemporary. The workbench offers a generous amount of workspace, while the two shelves offer storage for files and folders, or else you could decorate them with a houseplant or two to complete the stylish look.

5. SKARSTA Sit/Stand Desk, IKEA

Another sit/stand desk, the SKARSTA from IKEA offers all of the benefits of the adjustable height while keeping it simple and low budget. The height can move between 70cm and 120cm just by cranking a handle. The generous workspace means you can have files, folders, technical drawings and anything else you need out and to hand, while the simple, modern design means it can be dressed up or down, depending on the space it’s sitting in.

6. Hetton Corner Computer Desk, eBay

Corner desks are great when you need to create an office in a small space (especially if you’re working in a mixed-use room where you don’t want the desk to dominate). The Hetton is just such a desk, with ample space for a laptop or large monitor and keyboard, plus low shelves that are perfect for a printer or a PC tower. Available in white, black, pine and walnut, there’s a colour to suit your space and, at less than £40, it’s an absolute steal.

7. Habitat Valence Office Desk in Rose Gold, Argos

As you’d expect from a brand such as Habitat, the Valence is super stylish and bang on trend with a smart A-frame shape and a beautifully contrasting blend of grey wood-effect and rose gold. At only 100cm wide, it’s compact enough to fit in most spaces, but there’s plenty of working space too. The desk also boasts two drawers and a hidden shelf for storing documents and office supplies. Finish the look with a rose gold lamp and possibly a pretty trailing plant in a rose gold pot.

8. Cuuba Libre L-Shape Desk, Wayfair

L-shaped desks are perfect for when you need a wrap-around working space. The Cuuba Libre from Wayfair does this splendidly, in both its colourways (Rivera Oak White and Sanremo Oak). It boasts a generous workspace (plus extra on the side unit), open shelves, a cupboard and a drawer. In addition to this, it can be arranged as either a left or right-hand version, giving you control of the layout of your home office. It also has a finished back, meaning you can use it as a room divider, as well as a corner desk.

9. Progress Right Hand Ergonomic Desk and Progress Left Hand Ergonomic Desk, Furniture@Work

If you want a simple, functional desk then the Progress Ergonomic Desk, available in right and left hand versions, is perfect. A simple, classic L-shape, it features knock-proof edging, height-levelling feet, and two cable access points. You can customise it to suit you as well, with a choice of size, leg colour and desk colour. It’s not going to win any style awards, but if you want a desk that does the job and does it well, this is a great pick.

10. Loft Compact Desk, Marks & Spencer

If space is at a premium, then good old M&S have you covered with the compact desk from their Loft range. The minimalist look combining white and oak veneer gets top style points, while the compact size means it will fit in even the smallest of alcoves or box rooms. The rear shelf gives you space for stationery, a book or two, or a photo of a loved one, while the main workbench offers ample space for your laptop. What’s more, it’s covered by a 10-year guarantee.
